HUNDREDS TAKE

TO THE MOOR.

Here's a site you'll probably never see again on Dartmoor, and it's one we never wanted to see!  So why did we organise this?

Well if you beleived the propaganda banded about prior to the Cycling Ban on the Common Land of Dartmoor, you would have thought that this was an everyday occurrance.

Of course groups of Cyclists do use the Moor, and there will inevitably be some wear and tear caused by them, but this is probably small compared to the vast amound of walking and horse riding that goes on on Dartmoor (uncontrolled!). Most Cycling takes place on an individual basis or with small groups.

The mass gathering was partly to gain press publicity, which we acheived, but also to prove a point. That Dartmoor is a large wilderness, and that even a large group of Cyclists can very rapidly disperse into virtual obscurity on the landscape. For many years some Landowners have claimed cyclist's to be a visual intrusion on the Moors, - a bit odd when other parties encourage us to wear bright clothing for safety reasons!  Suffice to say that the geniune Moorland cyclist wishes to be as unobtrusive on the Moors as the geniune Rambler or Horse Rider.
